The weather seems to be a big topic for us but that’s because it’s one of the reasons we invented GripStrips! We have recently turned that corner of darker and cooler evenings and said goodbye to summer. With the change in season we can expect more rain and possibly frost or even snow, depending on where you live. Fall is here!
With the wet and colder weather the risks increase for those susceptible of having a fall. Our elders are some of the most vulnerable to slips and falls. According to Statistics Canada:
“Falls are the most common cause of injury among older Canadians. Every year, it is estimated 1 in 3 seniors aged 65 years and older are likely to fall at least once. Falls are also one of the leading causes of injury – related hospitalizations among seniors, and contributed to 73, 190 hospitalizations during 2008 -2009.”
The unfortunate fact is that as we age we become more likely to fall. There are a variety of reasons that lead to falls in our older generation: ill health, a loss of balance, weaker eyesight or just simply a mistake was made. However, falls can be avoided if the right precautions are taken. For a more complete list of what do to prevent falling, please have a look at this link.
At GripStrips, we focus on the outside risks for elders and have these ideas for you to consider:
1. Keep any outside stairs clear of debris.
2. Make sure pathways are cleared and even.
3. Ensure handrails are accessible to stairs.
4. Consider putting extra tread on the stairs to prevent slips, something like GripStrips.
5. Go slow, never rush up stairs or along pathways.
As autumn settles in and the weather turns, consider looking around your home to make things safer for your elderly friends. Why not drop in to visit an elder and see if you can help make their environment a bit safer? We’re sure they will welcome the help!
